Bird Droppings: Health Risks, Diseases & Cleanup

Why Bird Droppings Are a Facility Problem

Bird droppings are not just an aesthetic issue. Accumulated pigeon, starling, and gull guano supports fungal and bacterial pathogens that become airborne the moment the deposit is disturbed. In food processing, warehousing, healthcare, and any facility with third-party audits, droppings are a documented compliance failure — and a real hazard to the maintenance staff sent to clean them up.

Diseases Transmitted by Bird Droppings

Histoplasmosis

Pigeon and starling droppings, especially dry, aged accumulations in attics, ledges, and rooftop equipment.
Health Risk
Fungal spores (Histoplasma capsulatum) become airborne when droppings are disturbed. Inhalation causes flu-like illness; severe cases cause lung disease and can be fatal in immunocompromised workers.

Cryptococcosis

Pigeon droppings — the fungus (Cryptococcus neoformans) grows readily in aged pigeon guano.
Health Risk
Airborne spores can cause pulmonary infection and, in immunocompromised individuals, cryptococcal meningitis.

Psittacosis (Parrot Fever)

Ectoparasites

Nesting material from pigeons, sparrows, and swallows.

Bird mites, swallow bugs, and fleas migrate off abandoned nests and bite workers. Common trigger for indoor infestation calls after bird removal.

OSHA & Regulatory Context

  • OSHA does not have a bird-dropping-specific standard, but exposure is regulated under the General Duty Clause and the Respiratory Protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134).
  • NIOSH recommends respiratory protection (N95 minimum, PAPR for large disturbances), disposable coveralls, gloves, and eye protection for any dropping cleanup.
  • Dry droppings must be wetted with a disinfectant before removal to suppress airborne spore release.
  • Any accumulation deeper than a business card should be treated as a hazardous cleanup, not a janitorial task.

Commercial Cleanup Protocol

  1. Contain the work area with poly sheeting and post 'Restricted Entry' signage.
  2. Wet down droppings with an EPA-registered disinfectant and let dwell for the labeled contact time.
  3. Remove droppings and nesting material by hand or HEPA vacuum — never dry sweep or use compressed air.
  4. Bag waste in double 6-mil poly, seal, and dispose per state and local waste regulations.
  5. Apply an enzymatic or biocide surface treatment to break down residual biofilm.
  6. Inspect and seal every access point before removing containment — reinfestation is a matter of days without exclusion.
