Overview

Birds can't see glass. They see reflected sky and trees, or a clear path through, and fly straight into it. Window strikes are now the second-largest human-caused threat to birds worldwide, and every collision leaves dead birds, smudged glass, and complaints at your entrances. BirdShades is an invisible bird protection window film made in Austria that fixes the problem at the source. As of October 2026, Varment Guard is one of only a few BirdShades installers in the United States. HOW IT WORKS: Most birds can see ultraviolet (UV) light, but people can't. The BirdShades film carries a UV pattern that birds see as a solid barrier. To people, the glass stays clear and the view and architecture stay the same. The film goes on the outside of the glass across the whole surface, fits windows of any size or shape, and is easy to maintain. It has been tested in several scientific test setups, including flight-tunnel trials.

Problems It Solves

  • Birds flying into glass facades, entrances, skywalks, and atriums
  • Dead or injured birds near entrances that upset visitors and staff
  • Repeated cleaning of impact marks and droppings on glass
  • Bird-friendly building codes and sustainability goals that require collision-safe glass
  • Decals and stickers that block the view and look bad
  • Wildlife complaints and bad press for corporate and public buildings

Commercial Applications

  • Glass curtain walls and office building facades
  • Skywalks, atriums, and glass corridors
  • Hospitals, clinics, and healthcare campuses
  • Schools, universities, and libraries
  • Nature centers, zoos, and parks buildings
  • Corporate campuses near trees, water, or open space
  • Glass railings, bus shelters, and noise barriers
  • Retail storefronts and hospitality buildings

Professional Installation

Every BirdShades project starts with a site walk. We look for glass that is most likely to cause bird strikes, like glass that reflects trees or sky, see-through corners, glass near vegetation or water, and spots where staff find dead birds. Next we measure each pane and plan out the film. Our crew cleans and preps the outside of the glass, then applies the BirdShades film across the full surface to the manufacturer's specifications. We use lifts or rope access when needed. At the end we walk the site with you and give you care instructions. Because the film goes on the outside of existing glass, there's no need to replace windows and most buildings can stay open during the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most effective long-term fix is to make glass visible to birds. BirdShades bird-safe window film does this with a UV pattern that birds can see and people can't. Your windows stay clear, and birds treat the glass as a barrier instead of open sky.
