How to Get Rid of Starlings

A commercial guide to permanent European Starling removal — flocking behavior, cavity exclusion, and what actually keeps starlings off your building.

Why Starlings Keep Coming Back

European Starlings are one of the most aggressive cavity nesters in North America. A single mated pair produces two broods a year, and juveniles return to the same building to nest the following spring. Flock roosts routinely number in the thousands, staining facades and clogging drainage with droppings. Getting rid of starlings on a commercial site is a cavity and roost problem — until every opening is sealed and every roost is broken up, the flock rebuilds.

The Six-Step Commercial Method

Step 01

Understand Starling Pressure

European Starlings flock in the hundreds to thousands and target cavities — vents, signs, soffit gaps, and rooftop equipment. They are aggressive cavity nesters that displace native birds and re-use the same nest sites season after season. Getting rid of starlings on a commercial building starts with mapping every cavity and roost.

Step 02

Clean and Decontaminate Nest Sites

Starling nests carry mites, salmonella, and histoplasmosis spores. Before any exclusion, remove nesting material with HEPA vacuum and PPE, then enzymatically treat the surface. Sealing a cavity with active nesting inside traps contamination and produces odor problems within weeks.

Step 03

Seal Every Cavity

Starlings enter through openings as small as 1 inch. Screen exhaust vents, dryer vents, and soffit gaps with 1/2-inch hardware cloth or purpose-built vent guards. Sign cavities, HVAC penetrations, and rooftop equipment enclosures all need positive closure — a single unsealed cavity restarts the colony.

Exclude Roosting Structures

Starlings roost on I-beams, canopies, and rafters at night in massive numbers. Knotted polyethylene netting closes off open bays, loading docks, and courtyards. On ledges and parapets, electric shock track or post-and-wire systems break up the roost. Bird spikes alone are usually inadequate for starling flock pressure.

Step 05

Layer Deterrents Over Large Areas

For orchards, feed lots, rail yards, and other wide-open surfaces that can't be netted, automated laser deterrents (BirdzOut) and sonic distress-call units disrupt flocking behavior. Deterrents are most effective on starlings when combined with exclusion of the primary roost.

Step 06

Time the Work Around Breeding Season

Starlings breed April through July, with two broods per season in most of the U.S. Exclusion is easiest in late fall and winter, before nesting starts. Mid-season work requires nest removal permits in some states — our team handles the paperwork alongside the install.

What Doesn't Work

Will scare tape or fake predators get rid of starlings?
Starling flocks habituate to static visual scares within days. Reflective tape and plastic owls are not a commercial solution.
Are ultrasonic devices effective on starlings?
No. Starlings hear in roughly the same range as humans; consumer ultrasonic units have no measurable effect on flocks.
Can I just poison starlings?
European Starlings are non-native and unprotected federally, but toxicants are restricted-use and rarely appropriate on commercial sites. Exclusion is permanent and avoids secondary poisoning risk.
Will trapping fix a starling problem?
Trapping reduces immediate numbers but the cavities and roosts refill from neighboring flocks. Trapping only works as part of a full exclusion program.
